HyCross: Toyota Innova has long ruled India’s luxury MPV market. But now, customers are switching sides. The reason? Better fuel efficiency. The Innova HyCross hybrid is fast becoming a favourite, capturing more market share than the traditional Crysta diesel version.
HyCross Now Dominates Innova Sales
In the first quarter of FY2026 (April–June 2025), Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 80,432 vehicles, marking an 18% jump over last year. A major chunk of this came from the Innova lineup, with 25,383 units sold. However, what stands out is the shift in buyer preference. Only 39% of Innova sales came from the Crysta model, while the HyCross accounted for 61%, confirming its rising popularity.
Strong Hybrid Tech Gives HyCross the Edge
The HyCross features a modern 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine paired with Toyota’s fifth-generation strong hybrid system. This setup produces 184 horsepower and 188 Nm of torque. There’s also a 2.0-litre petrol-only option delivering 173 horsepower with a CVT gearbox. Spacious interiors and premium touches make it a smart choice for large families.
Diesel Crysta Losing Ground Due to Lower Mileage
The Innova Crysta comes with a 2.4-litre diesel engine that offers 150 horsepower. Its official mileage is 15.10 km/l, but in real-world conditions, it ranges between 9 and 13 km/l. Although it’s still reliable, customers now prefer the more efficient and tech-loaded HyCross. Reduced variant options also suggest a gradual phase-out.
Hybrid Means Better Efficiency
Hybrid vehicles like the HyCross offer the benefits of both fuel and electric power. This car runs on electric mode nearly 60% of the time, which helps improve real-world mileage. It delivers up to 13.1 km/l in the city and 16.1 km/l on highways a major reason for its growing popularity.
Higher Price, But HyCross Still Wins
The HyCross is priced between ₹26.31 lakh and ₹31.34 lakh (ex-showroom), which is higher than the Crysta’s range of ₹19.09 lakh to ₹21.30 lakh. Despite the price gap, customers continue to choose the HyCross. It offers more value, better mileage, and a premium hybrid driving experience, making it Toyota’s modern MPV success story.
