Indian Railways – If your mobile is lost during a train journey, then you do not need to panic now. The railway claims that the RPF (Railway Protection Force) is claiming to find the phone soon with the help of some new technology. For this, a partnership has been done between the railway and the telecom department. Due to which you will get help in finding the mobile phone.
Work started on pilot project in NFR
According to the information received from the railway, taking an important step towards returning lost mobile phones to passengers, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has successfully joined the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal of the Department of Telecommunications. This program was started as a pilot project in the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). After its success, this program is going to be implemented in Indian Railways all over India, which will benefit lakhs of railway passengers. The railway claims that after working on this portal, more than 1.15 lakh phones of passengers have been returned.
how does it work
According to information received from the Railways, the CEIR portal of the Department of Telecommunications is an important digital tool designed to recover mobile phones by blocking, tracking and managing lost or stolen devices. By leveraging this platform, RPF will now render lost and stolen mobile phones unusable by blocking their IMEI numbers, thereby preventing illegal possession and resale of these devices. This initiative will also help in faster recovery of lost phones through advanced monitoring capabilities.
Complaint registration through ‘Rail Madad’ Passengers can report lost or stolen mobile phones through Rail Madad platform either online or by dialling 139. If they do not wish to lodge an FIR, they will be directed to register a complaint on the CEIR portal. Addressing a gathering of RPF zonal units, Director General of Railway Protection Force Manoj Yadav said, “RPF’s collaboration with Department of Telecommunication for operationalising the CEIR portal is a significant achievement in railway security.
By using digital technology, we aim to provide passengers with a transparent and effective mechanism to recover their lost or stolen mobile phones. This initiative strengthens law enforcement capabilities and promotes greater confidence among rail passengers. We are committed to protecting passenger property and ensuring a safe travel experience on the railway network.”
Operation Amanat was also successful
RPF has been at the forefront of efforts to recover lost or stolen passenger property in trains and station premises. RPF’s campaign ‘Amanat’ with the sole aim of returning valuables to their rightful owners has shown impressive results. Between January 2024 and February 2025, RPF has returned lost or stolen items worth Rs 84.03 crore to passengers.
How will RPF work
Once the phone is reported lost, CEIR registration by RPF will register the complaint on RPF Zonal Cyber Cell SOEIR portal and after entering the required details the device will be blocked. Monitoring and Recovery Once the lost phone is identified with a new SIM card, the device user will be advised to return it to the nearest RPF post.
