Indian Railways: Severe cold and dense fog have put the brakes on travel across the country, including North India. From Delhi-NCR to Bihar and Punjab, visibility has dropped so low that it’s difficult to travel on the roads during mornings and nights. This inclement weather has had the worst impact on Indian Railways.

Keeping passenger safety paramount, the Railways has decided to cancel more than 20 major trains until February and March 2026. If you’re planning a trip to Patna, Howrah, Amritsar, or Delhi in the next few days, this news is crucial. In this article, we’ll provide a complete list of all the trains that have derailed due to fog, so you don’t have to worry about going to the station.

Railways’ Major Decision for Passenger Safety

Indian Railways New Rules

Fog reduces visibility on railway tracks in North India to near zero, increasing the risk of accidents. In response, the Railways has cancelled trains on busy routes like Muzaffarpur, Prayagraj, Howrah, Amritsar, and Kamakhya. Railway officials say this decision was taken out of necessity to avoid risking the lives of passengers. Passengers traveling to Bihar and West Bengal, in particular, may face the most difficulties, as these routes have the highest number of train cancellations.

Passengers traveling to Bihar and Delhi should be cautious.

The cancellation of trains to Bihar, such as the Janseva Express and the Upasana Express, will cause inconvenience to thousands of laborers and students. If your train is included in this list, you will receive a 100% refund as per railway regulations. If you booked your ticket online, the refund will automatically be credited to your bank account.

However, for counter tickets, you will need to surrender your ticket at the station. Before departing, be sure to check the live status of your train using the NTES (National Train Enquiry System) app or by calling 139.

Other Railway Safety Measures During Fog

To ensure safe train operation in dense fog, the Railways has fitted locomotives with “fog devices.” This device provides the loco pilot with the exact distance of the upcoming signal, allowing the driver to determine the distance even when visibility is low. Despite this, speed controls are required in dense fog, resulting in delays of 5 to 10 hours for many trains. Passengers are advised to check their train times at the station before leaving home to avoid waiting in the bitter cold.
