Indian Railways has taken an important and welcome decision for rail passengers across the country. The railway has decided to reclassify 10 superfast trains into the regular express category. This decision will directly impact passenger fares, as the additional surcharge levied on superfast trains will be removed. Change from Superfast to Express is Necessary
According to the railway, the trains that were previously declared as superfast were not able to maintain the speed standards of superfast trains due to frequent stops at many stations. Despite this, passengers were being charged a superfast surcharge. To address this discrepancy, the railway has decided to change the status of these trains.
This move is considered part of the railway’s policy to ensure that passengers pay only for the services they receive.
Rule to be Implemented in a Phased Manner in April 2026
The new system will be implemented in April 2026 on different dates between April 13 and 16. Along with this, the numbers of the concerned trains will also be changed, but the routes and stoppages will remain the same.
The railway has clarified that this change is only related to the category and fare structure; no major changes will be made to the operational system.
Numbers of Some Major Trains Will Also Change
Under this change, the numbers of some major trains will be changed. For example, information has emerged that the numbers of the Vibhuti Express and Netaji Express will be changed. Passengers will have to keep the new numbers in mind while booking tickets.
Superfast Surcharge to be Eliminated
An additional surcharge is levied on passengers traveling on superfast trains. This charge varies depending on the class of travel (General, Sleeper, and AC coaches). After the removal of the superfast tag, this additional charge will no longer be applicable. This will reduce ticket fares and provide financial relief to ordinary passengers.
Passengers’ long-standing demand is finally fulfilled
For a long time, passengers had been demanding that extra charges should not be levied on trains that do not run at superfast speeds. The railways have now accepted this demand and made a decision accordingly. This decision is considered a significant step in the interest of passengers.
