Indian Railways has achieved a very important milestone. The country’s first Hydrogen-Powered Train Coach has been successfully tested at the Jind Railway Workshop in Haryana. This is indeed a great achievement that will play an important role in taking India towards a green future.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav shared the video of this successful test on his social media handle. Posting the video, he wrote, “India is currently developing a 1,200 HP Hydrogen-Powered Train, which will make the country one of the global leading countries in Hydrogen Train Technology.” This move puts India in the group of select countries using hydrogen for rail transport.

How will the hydrogen train run

It is natural to ask, if hydrogen-powered trains are neither dependent on diesel nor electricity supply lines, then how will they run? Let’s understand this amazing technology. This technology mainly works on a hydrogen fuel cell system. Hydrogen gas is filled in the tank installed in the train engine. At the same time, oxygen is taken through the air. When these two meet, a chemical reaction starts.

Production of electricity

After the hydrogen and oxygen are mixed, electricity is produced, which powers the motor and runs the train.

Use of battery

According to the information, batteries are also used in the train. That is, batteries are used on high-speed or uphill routes, which gives additional power to the train.

A big step towards Green Future

The biggest benefit of this technology is to the environment. Hydrogen trains do not emit carbon dioxide or any poisonous gas. It eliminates the pollution caused by conventional trains. Hydrogen trains are already running on hydrogen systems in countries like France and Germany. This move of Indian Railways will not only promote green energy but will also play a big role in achieving the target of Net-Zero Carbon Emissions by 2070. This shows India’s seriousness towards its environmental commitments.

Importance of hydrogen trains for India

For a large country like India, the successful implementation of hydrogen trains can prove to be a game-changer in many ways. Dependence on fossil fuels will be reduced, which will increase India’s energy security. India’s development in hydrogen train technology will give the country a strong position globally. Air pollution will be reduced in both urban and rural areas, which will improve people’s health. Investment in new technology will create employment opportunities and promote new industries.
