Aadhaar App: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a new Aadhaar mobile app, which aims to make it easier for people to carry their digital identity with them and share it securely when needed. The app acts as a lightweight and profile-centric digital wallet for Aadhaar.
In this, you can keep your Aadhaar information safe in your mobile, decide which information to share, and add Aadhaar profiles of multiple family members linked to the same mobile number in a single phone. The new app emphasizes modern authentication methods, such as face authentication, biometric locks, information sharing via QR codes, and offline use. It also retains UIDAI’s long-standing and trusted security mechanisms, such as OTPs sent to Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers. These features are intended to enhance convenience and give people greater control over their identity.
What can the new Aadhaar app do?
The new UIDAI Aadhaar app offers the following key features:
Multi-profile management: Up to five Aadhaar profiles can be added to a single device, provided all Aadhaar profiles are linked to the same registered mobile number. This is very useful for families.
Face Authentication: After OTP verification, the user’s face is scanned and matched with the photo stored in the UIDAI. This reduces the risk of someone else setting up Aadhaar incorrectly.
Biometric lock and unlock: Aadhaar profiles stored in the app can be protected with a fingerprint or face lock. Unlocking requires a biometric or PIN.
Sharing limited (masked) information and QR codes: Users can choose whether to share their full Aadhaar information or only essential details, such as name and photo. The app also features contactless verification via QR code.
Usage and authentication history: The app includes an activity log that lets you see when and where your Aadhaar was used. This increases transparency.
How to download and use the new Aadhaar app?
Here is the easy step-by-step process to use the new Aadhaar app:
Open the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and search for the official UIDAI “Aadhaar” app. Download and install it.
Open the app and select the language you prefer, then start registration.
Enter the 12 digit Aadhaar number printed on your Aadhaar card correctly.
UIDAI will send an OTP to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. Enter the OTP and confirm the mobile number.
The app will then ask you to perform a live face scan. This scan is matched with your photo stored in the UIDAI. This step is crucial to prevent someone from setting up your Aadhaar incorrectly.
After successful face authentication, you will need to create a six-digit security PIN. This PIN will be the primary password to access your Aadhaar profile in the app.
You can also enable fingerprint or face unlock on your phone. This feature works in addition to your PIN and doesn’t replace face authentication during registration.
Verify the app’s permissions, confirm all instructions, and complete the registration. You can now view your Aadhaar in the app and unlock it with your PIN or phone biometrics.
Whenever Aadhaar verification is required, all you need to do is show your digital Aadhaar or dynamic QR code. The service provider can scan the QR code or view only the information you want to share at that time.
