Stalin may officially announce this plan before Diwali. Earlier, in his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that a big gift awaits the countrymen this Diwali. GST rates on essential goods will be reduced. After this, the central government has implemented a two-tier GST on some essential goods. In this context, this time the Tamil Nadu government has also decided to provide cash relief to the public as per its means.

Every year, the Tamil Nadu government provides a special package for ration card holders for the Pongal festival. This year, the state government has already distributed rice, jaggery, sugarcane, cardamom, cashew, dhoti and saree as part of the Pongal package. However, the cash assistance provided for the last few years has been stopped, which has created controversy among the public and the opposition. This time, the government is moving towards restoring that tradition. According to secretariat sources, the scheme will include necessary Pongal items along with cash assistance.
