8th Pay Commission- There is a new update revealed regarding 8th Pay Commission. The government has started the process of filling 42 vacancies including the posts of advisors and chairman in the 8th Pay Commission. According to media reports, the commission will start functioning from the end of next month after the finalisation of the Terms of Reference (ToR).
On April 21, the Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance issued two separate circulars for the appointment of 40 personnel in the 8th Pay Commission. Most of these posts will be filled by officers from different government departments on deputation basis.
Apart from these 40 posts, the chairman and two other key members will be selected. According to the Financial Express report, an official said that the names have been finalized to fill the top posts including the chairman and two other members. It will be announced soon.
The appointed members include two directors/deputy secretaries, three under secretaries and 37 others, who will be assigned initial tasks after the ToR is issued, the official said. If we look at the previous structure, the 7th Pay Commission had a total of 45 members. It included the chairman, 18 people in the secretariat, 16 advisors and 7 other employees. This commission was headed by Justice Ashok Kumar Mathur.
If we talk about the 6th Pay Commission, it also had four members including the chairman, but only 17 people were working in the secretariat. The 6th Pay Commission was headed by Justice BN Srikrishna. The interesting thing is that the number of members in the 5th Pay Commission was even less. It included only three members. If we talk about the initial phase, the first pay commission had nine members, the second had six, while the third and fourth pay commissions had five members each.
Discussion among central government employees
Meanwhile, the employee side of the National Council (NC-JCM) has begun preparing a comprehensive memorandum to be submitted to the 8th Pay Commission after an extended meeting of its standing committee on April 22. In this meeting, several key issues related to central government employees and pensioners were discussed in detail, including minimum salary, pay scales, fitment factor, allowances, promotion policy and pension benefits.
A drafting committee has been formed to prepare the memorandum. This committee will include representatives of major employee federations. These federations will send the names of their representatives by 30 April 2025. The Department of Expenditure said in the circular, “Employees will be appointed on these posts from the date of formation of the 8th Pay Commission till the closure of the commission. It also states that the review of applications for vacant posts will continue till all the posts are filled.”
