FASTag was first implemented in the country in 2014 to provide relief from traffic jams at toll plazas. It works through radio-frequency identification technology, allowing vehicles to pass through toll plazas without delays. However, over time, it was observed that FASTag caused long jams at toll plazas. The main reason for this was the carelessness of users. Often, people did not recharge their FASTags on time and would only recharge them when they reached the toll plaza, leading to long queues.

To address this issue, the NHAI has introduced a new rule that aims to prevent jams at toll plazas. However, it’s important to note that FASTag also has an expiry date.

How Long is FASTag Valid?

According to the NHAI website, FASTag remains valid for 5 years from the date of purchase. However, you do not need to renew it after 5 years. Once issued, you only need to recharge or top up the FASTag as per your usage. You can also check its validity on the FASTag portal.

How to Check FASTag Validity

  1. Login to your FASTag account
  2. Go to the dashboard and check the FASTag status
  3. Use the mobile app to check the validity

What Happens if FASTag Expires?

When your FASTag expires, it will be auto-renewed for another 5 years. The concerned bank will also notify you about the renewal. To keep FASTag active, ensure that you keep recharging it regularly.

New Rule for FASTag

A new rule regarding FASTag has been implemented by NPCI from February 17, 2025. The notification was issued on January 28, 2025. According to the rule:

  • If the FASTag remains blacklisted 60 minutes before scanning or 10 minutes after scanning, the payment will not be processed.
