FASTag Rules Change from February 1st, Toll Tax Payment Now Easier

Adarsh P January 28, 2026

New FASTag Rules: The government has taken a major decision to simplify the FASTag system. The government has announced that from February 1, 2026, the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification process will no longer be required for new FASTags issued for cars, jeeps, and vans. This aims to reduce delays, repeated requests for documents, and user complaints during the process of obtaining and using FASTags.

Previously, KYV verification was mandatory after the FASTag was issued to confirm the vehicle. This often required drivers to upload their Registration Certificate (RC), send photos, and go through the tag re-verification process, even if they had valid documents. This led to delays in FASTag activation and caused unnecessary inconvenience to users.

Banks will now take full responsibility

The NHAI has now handed over the complete responsibility of issuing FASTags to banks. According to the new rules, banks will verify all vehicle-related information before issuing the FASTag. Vehicle verification will be done through the VAHAN database. If the vehicle information is not available there, the verification will be completed based on the Registration Certificate (RC). This means that there will be no need for separate KYV verification after the tag is activated.

What was KYV, and why was it removed?

Know Your Vehicle (KYV) was an additional verification step in the FASTag system. Its purpose was to ensure that the FASTag was linked to the correct vehicle and that no incorrect or duplicate tags were being used. However, in practice, this process often caused delays and technical problems. Therefore, the NHAI decided to remove KYV.

What has changed under the new rules?

After February 1, 2026, KYV will not be mandatory for new car FASTags. All necessary checks will be completed before the tag is issued. Existing FASTag holders will also no longer need to undergo regular KYV verification. Re-verification will only be required in cases where a specific complaint arises, such as the tag being linked to the wrong vehicle, misuse of the tag, a loose tag, or a tag issued incorrectly.

What benefits will ordinary drivers get?

After the new rules are implemented, getting and using FASTag will become much easier and faster. The tag can now be used immediately upon receipt. There will be no need to repeatedly upload documents or visit banks and customer care centers. Additional verification will only be required in complaint-based cases, which will relieve users of unnecessary hassles.
