Why is it necessary to change the surname in EPFO records?

If you have changed your surname after marriage, it is very important to have the correct name and identity in the records of EPFO (Employees Provident Fund Organization). If there is a difference in the name or any information, there may be a problem in services like PF claim, pension transfer or PF transfer in a new job. EPFO always verifies the information by matching your Aadhaar, PAN and bank records, hence it is mandatory to match every detail.

Ways to change surname in EPFO

There are two ways to change the surname in EPFO account, you can change your surname online from home. Apart from this, you can also change your surname by visiting the EPFO office.

Online process

1. Go to the unified portal of EPFO (UAN Member Portal) and login with your UAN and password.

2. Select the Modify Basic Details option in the Manage section.

3. Enter the new surname as per the Aadhaar card and click on Update Details.

4. The request for change will go to your employer. They will check the documents and send it forward to EPFO.

5. EPFO officials will accept the changes after final approval.

6. The whole process usually takes 15–30 days.

 

Offline method

First of all download the Joint Declaration Form, in which write the old and new surname clearly.

Carry necessary documents like Aadhar card, marriage certificate or other identity proof.

Get the form signed and stamped by your employer.

Submit all the documents to the EPFO regional office.

Alterations may also take around 15–30 business days.
