Edible Oil Prices

Amid ongoing festive demand, oilseed prices remained strong in the country’s market on Saturday. Market experts say that due to rising demand for edible oils and reduced imports, the government must take steps to address the shortfall. Mustard oil alone will not be enough to meet the demand.

Additionally, the availability of cottonseed is low, with only about 20% remaining with farmers. Experts also noted that palm olein prices are soaring, leading to a decline in its imports.

Mustard MSP Update

The current Minimum Support Price (MSP) of mustard is INR 5,650 per quintal. From March 28, mustard procurement will begin at the new MSP of INR 5,950 per quintal. Due to this, farmers are holding onto their stock to benefit from the increased price.

Government Raids on Adulterated Cottonseed Cake

Sources revealed that the government has conducted raids in some parts of western India after complaints of adulterated cottonseed cake. Continuous monitoring is needed to ensure market stability and maintain business confidence in the oilseed sector.

Need for Government Action

To boost oilseed production, the government must take special measures to ensure that increased production finds a stable market. A clear policy and structured taxation system are required. At present, crops like soybean, groundnut, and sunflower are being sold below MSP in the spot market, making it difficult for farmers to recover their costs.
