The e-passport service has been introduced by the Indian government in the country. Citizens can apply for this new type of travel card through this service. Prior to the official run of the service, the government trialed it on April 1, 2024. After the trial was deemed a success, it is now officially available. Currently, this service is only available in a few passport offices in India, with plans to roll the service out to more centres soon. An e-passport is distinct from a regular passport, as it will contain a small gold symbol printed below the title on the front cover.

E-Passport in India: What Is It and How to Get It

An e-passport is a modern passport issued by the Indian government. It has both a physical aspect and a digital aspect, along with several security features. An e-passport contains a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip and antenna that stores personal information and biometric features, including your fingerprints and a digital photograph, securely.

The e-passport may be identified by a small gold symbol on the front cover beneath the title “PASSPORT”. An e-passport does not replace a standard passport; rather, it provides enhanced security, improved transparency, and faster and more convenient international travel.

  • It holds personal details such as name, date of birth, and passport number
