8th Pay Commission Update: Central government employees and pensioners are soon set to receive a major boon—one they have been awaiting with great anticipation. It is widely believed that, during the final days of March, the government may announce an increase of up to 2 per cent in the Dearness Allowance (DA).

This move will result in a salary hike for central government employees, serving as a vital lifeline during these inflationary times. This will mark the first such increase of 2026—a development from which there are high expectations. While no official statement has yet been issued regarding the exact date of the DA hike, various media reports are making claims to this effect.

Find Out: How Much Will the DA Increase?

The question of exactly how much the Dearness Allowance will rise remains a significant one. However, based on the latest data from the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI), experts estimate that a 2 per cent hike in the DA is likely this time around. Currently, central government employees are receiving a DA benefit of 5 per cent; there is speculation that this figure could rise to per cent

For instance, if an employee’s basic salary is ₹18,000, their DA would increase from ₹10,440 to ₹10,800, resulting in a direct monthly benefit of ₹360. If the DA hike is implemented now, the revised rates will be deemed effective retroactively from January 1, 20Beforer to this, the 3 per cent DA hike that was announced earlier had come into effect on July 1, 2025, providing a direct boost to employees’ salaries.

Discover the Reason Behind the Delay in the New Pay Commission

It is worth noting that the primary reason cited for the current delay is the transition between Pay Commissions. The tenure of the 7th Pay Commission officially concluded on December 31, 2025.

Consequently, all eyes are now fixed on the 8th Pay Commission, which has already been constituted. However, since the Commission has been allotted a period of 18 months to submit its report, a comprehensive revision of salaries is still some time away.

In the interim, the Dearness Allowance (DA) will continue to serve as the primary mechanism for combating the rising cost of living. Meanwhile, the Central Government could implement the 8th Pay Commission at any time after mid-2027. The committee for the Commission has already been constituted, and the review process is proceeding rapidly.
