Cashless Health Card: The year 2026 has brought a new joy for millions of teachers and employees working in the Basic and Secondary Education Departments of Uttar Pradesh. The Yogi Adityanath government has fully implemented the Cashless Treatment Scheme to improve teachers’ health and ease their financial burden. Teachers will no longer have to run around offices in times of illness, worrying about hefty hospital bills, arranging advance payments, or seeking medical reimbursement.
This scheme, modeled after Ayushman Bharat, will provide completely free treatment in government and private hospitals. The announcement made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Teachers’ Day has now received cabinet approval, directly benefiting approximately 1.5 million teachers, employees, and their dependents.
Why is this new cashless scheme special
This decision by the UP government is being considered a revolutionary step for the education sector. Until now, teachers had to spend a significant amount of money themselves in the event of a serious illness, and then spend months running around government departments to get the bill approved.
But now, the government has eradicated this problem by allocating a massive budget of ₹448 crore. Its primary objective is to enable teachers to focus their energy on educating students and leading healthy lives, without worrying about medical expenses. Now, teachers can be treated in empanelled private hospitals without paying a single penny.
Who will benefit from this scheme
The scope of this scheme is vast and covers personnel from basic to secondary and Sanskrit education.
Secondary Education Department
Under this category, teachers and staff of aided and unaided schools, subject experts in vocational education, honorary teachers, and teachers of schools affiliated with the Sanskrit Education Council will benefit. According to the Secondary Education Minister, approximately 2.97 lakh people will benefit from this category, with the government incurring an expenditure of ₹89.25 crore.
Basic Education Council
This category includes teachers, Shiksha Mitras, special educators, instructors, and wardens and staff of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) in Basic Education Council schools. Furthermore, cooks and their families working under the PM Poshan Yojana (Mid-Day Meal) have also been covered under this security cover.
More than 11.95 lakh personnel have been included under the Basic Education Department, with an annual premium of ₹358.61 crore. A total of approximately 1.5 million people will be directly involved in this scheme.
How will your health card be made
Teachers will have to go through a systematic process to avail themselves of the benefits of the scheme. The government has established a transparent system at the district level:
- A committee will be formed in each district under the chairmanship of the District School Inspector (DIOS) and the District Basic Education Officer (BSA).
- This committee will closely examine the eligibility of teachers and the documents submitted by them.
- After verification is complete, eligible teachers will be issued an official approval card, or ‘Cashless Health Card.’
- Treatment will begin upon presenting this card upon hospitalization. You won’t have to pay a single rupee from your own pocket; the government will make the entire payment directly to the hospital.
What benefits will be provided
This scheme is completely modeled after the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. It will cover expenses ranging from critical illnesses to simple surgeries. Teachers, along with their spouses, children, and dependent parents, are also covered under this scheme. Teachers will receive hassle-free VIP treatment when visiting the listed hospitals. This scheme will not only boost teachers’ morale but also protect their families from financial hardship.
