Bharat Bandh Today: Will Banks, Schools and Markets Remain Shut Today? Know the reason

Sweta Mitra February 12, 2026

Bharat Bandh: The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) along with 10 major central trade unions is set to hold a Bharat Bandh on February 12th. This strike aims to protest against the India-US interim trade agreement, the economic policies of the central government, and the new labor laws. Several national unions, such as INTUC, AITUC, CITU, and HMS, are backing this movement. They estimate that around 300 million workers could take part in the strike.

A number of bank unions are also participating, which is likely to affect banking services. Unions like AIBEA, AIBOA, and BEFI have chosen to join the strike, potentially disrupting operations at public sector banks.

What are the reasons behind the Bharat Bandh?

Farmers, laborers, and employee organizations have put forth various demands concerning the central government’s policies. The main demands include opposing the India-US interim trade agreement, retracting four new labor codes, resisting the privatization of government enterprises, reinstating the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), raising the minimum wage, safeguarding workers’ rights in the construction and power sectors, and revising agricultural policies. Additionally, bus, auto-rickshaw, and truck unions are anticipated to join the strike in multiple states, which could lead to significant disruptions in transportation services.

Which services might be impacted?

Transportation services could face disruptions in several states. Both public and private transport may be affected due to the backing of bus, auto, and truck unions. Major cities are likely to experience traffic issues. Banking services might see slower counter operations at public sector banks, and there could be delays in check clearances. However, banks will remain open. Online banking, digital payments, and ATM services will operate as usual. Markets and businesses may also experience some impact.

A bunch of trade groups and markets are backing the strike, which might cause some wholesale and retail markets to shut down either partially or completely. In government offices, attendance could be low in departments where trade unions are strong, which might slow things down. Local governments might decide on school and college operations based on how things unfold. Some areas might even declare holidays for transportation and safety reasons.

What services will still be running as usual?

Hospitals, ambulances, and other emergency services will keep going as normal. Fire departments, air travel, and airport operations won’t be affected either. Digital banking and ATM services will also be up and running.

Are banks going to be closed on February 12th?

February 12th isn’t an official holiday according to the Reserve Bank of India or any other bank. Branches will be open, but services might be a bit disrupted because of union involvement. If you’re planning to travel on February 12th, make sure to check your city’s transport situation ahead of time. If you can, try to handle your banking online and stay updated on local news before you head out to the market or government office.
