PAN 2.0 Card: The Income Tax Department has launched an upgraded version of the Permanent Account Number (PAN) system, known as PAN Card 2.0. According to the department, this new version enhances security and simplifies the application process. If you’re interested in learning how to apply for it, we’ve provided all the necessary details below.

A key feature of the e-PAN is the QR code, which significantly speeds up authentication and helps prevent fraud. You can obtain your e-PAN digitally at no cost, but if you prefer a physical PAN card, a small fee will apply. Importantly, existing PAN cards without a QR code will remain valid, so there’s no requirement to upgrade.

If you wish to obtain a PAN 2.0 card or its digital version, you can apply for it. Below, we outline the step-by-step process for applying, ensuring you receive the e-version of your PAN directly in your email.

How to apply?

Before you start the application, check who issued your PAN. You need to determine whether your PAN card was issued by NSDL or UTIITSL, which you can find on the back of your PAN card.

If your PAN was issued by NSDL, you will need to obtain your e-PAN from the NSDL e-PAN portal. Begin by entering your PAN number, Aadhaar number (if applicable), and date of birth. Ensure that all the information displayed matches your records. Next, you will need to complete OTP verification. You can request the OTP via email or SMS, and you must enter it within 10 minutes.

The first three requests for a PAN issued within 30 days are free; thereafter, a fee of Rs 8.26 (including GST) will apply. Once processed, your e-PAN will be sent to your registered email address within 30 minutes.

If UTIITSL has provided you with a PAN, head over to the UTIITSL e-PAN portal. There, you’ll need to input your PAN number, date of birth, and the captcha code. If your email isn’t registered, make sure to update it once the PAN 2.0 system is available. The fees remain unchanged. Once you finish the process, your e-PAN will be sent to your registered email in PDF format.

Key Points about PAN 2.0

Old PAN holders don’t need to make any changes. If you have an older PAN that lacks a QR code, it’s still valid and can be used. For a physical PAN card, the cost is Rs 50 for domestic delivery and Rs 15 for international delivery, plus postal charges. You can change details like your email address at no cost. The new QR-coded PAN enhances verification speed and lowers the chances of fraud. Even though your current PAN is still valid, experts recommend upgrading if you have an old white PAN card or one without a QR code.
