The Christmas festival will be celebrated across the country with great enthusiasm and fanfare. On this occasion, banking services will be affected throughout India on Thursday, December 25, 2025. According to the official bank holiday calendar issued by the Reserve Bank of India, all government and private banks in the country will remain closed on Christmas Day. Therefore, customers who have planned to visit a bank branch for any essential work should make their preparations in advance.

Why Banks Will Be Closed on Christmas

Christmas is a recognised public holiday in India under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Therefore, no counter-based services will be available at bank branches on this day. This will affect check clearing, cash deposits and withdrawals, and passbook-related transactions. Bank employees will not be working on this day, so all branch-related work will be postponed until the next working day.

Bank Holiday Schedule in December 2025

In the last week of December, some states and cities also have additional bank holidays. Banks will be closed in Aizawl, Kohima, and Shillong on December 24th. On December 25th, all banks will be closed across the country due to Christmas. Banking services will not be available in Aizawl, Kohima, and Shillong on December 26th. Banks will be closed only in Kohima on December 27th. On December 30th, banks will be closed in Shillong on the occasion of the death anniversary of U Kiang Nangbah. On December 31st, banking services will be suspended in Aizawl and Imphal due to New Year’s Eve and Imoinu Iratpa.

Which Services Will Remain Available When Banks Are Closed

Although bank branches will be closed, digital banking services will not be affected. Customers will be able to make payments through UPI, mobile banking, and internet banking will function normally, and ATM cash withdrawal facilities will also be available. Electricity, water, mobile recharge, and other online bill payments can also be made without any interruption.

What precautions should customers take?

If a customer needs to make cash deposits, withdraw large amounts, get drafts made, or perform any other check-related transactions, they should complete these tasks before the bank holidays. Especially during the last days of December, continuous holidays can cause delays in banking operations, so it’s best to plan.
