Ayushman Bharat: A parliamentary committee has proposed lowering the eligibility age for the Ayushman Vaya Vandana card from 70 years and older to 60 years and older, regardless of individuals’ socio-economic backgrounds, in order to enhance the reach of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance initiative.
Few suggestions
In light of the significant healthcare costs, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare submitted its 163rd report to the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. The committee also suggested increasing the current health coverage from Rs 5 lakh per family annually to Rs 10 lakh per family annually. It is important to highlight that on October 29, 2024, the government had extended the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana to offer free treatment benefits of up to Rs 5 lakh per year to all senior citizens aged 70 and above, irrespective of their socio-economic status.
Noticed that numerous advanced tests and treatments are not included
Nevertheless, the committee observed that numerous advanced tests and treatments are not included in the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). The committee recommended a review of the packages and procedures currently covered by the scheme, advocating for the inclusion of new packages and procedures related to the treatment of high-cost critical illnesses and expensive diagnostic investigations, such as radiological diagnostics (CT, MRI, and nuclear imaging), within AB-PMJAY.
A budget of Rs 1,443 crore
A budget of Rs 1,443 crore has been allocated for the treatment of senior citizens aged 70 years and above who hold the Ayushman Vaya Vandana card.
