In India, the Aadhaar card is the most widely used document, with nearly 90% of the population in possession of one. The Aadhaar card is required for a range of purposes including admission to schools and colleges as well as access to government schemes. Therefore, it is very important that all details on the card are accurate.
After marriage, it is common for many women to change their surname in order for their information to be consistent across all government documents. What steps must a woman take in order to change her surname on her Aadhaar card after marriage? What is the process and what documents are required? We will explain all the details.
How to Update Your Name in Aadhaar
If you want to update your name without additional documentation, you can do so online through the UIDAI website, or at the Aadhaar Enrollment Center. If you wish to update your last name due to marriage (such as Mrs. Smith from Ms. Jones), you must go to the Aadhaar Seva Kendra to complete the name change. You can bring your marriage certificate to the center. They will complete the Aadhaar Enrollment & Update Form with you, and you will need to select the “name” field and enter your new last name. You will not be able to update your name online if you are getting married, as adding a last name requires further documentation.
Once you have the form filled out, you only need to submit documentation to complete the name change. You can provide your marriage certificate or a Gazette Notification as an authorized document as proof of your name change, and you will need your ID. Your documents will then be verified, and after you complete biometric verification, the application will be completed, and they will provide you an Update Request Number (URN). You can view the status of the update online with your URN and pay a ₹50 fee. When the application is completed and your last name has been changed, you will be able to download your new Aadhaar card online through the UIDAI website.
Documents Needed for Surname Change
You can use the following documents authorized by the UIDAI for a surname change:
– A marriage certificate (official proof of marriage)
– A Gazette notification (proof of name published in the Gazette)
– Court order or name change affidavit
– And: any ID that is a passport, a PAN card, drivers license, or voter ID
All of this will need to be submitted at the Aadhaar Seva Center so they can prove the surname change with more documentation than just the form.
