Following rumors about the ₹500 note, the central government clarified that there are no plans to stop the supply of ₹500 notes. This means that ₹500 notes, along with ₹100 and ₹200 notes, will continue to be available from ATMs.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary provided this important information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. He explained that the RBI makes decisions on the printing and circulation of notes in consultation with the government, so that people do not face any problems in transactions.

RBI Clarification Regarding Smaller Notes
The RBI issued a circular on April 28, 2025, directing banks and white-label ATM operators to ensure that their ATMs regularly dispense ₹100 and ₹200 notes.
But this does not necessarily mean that ₹500 notes will be discontinued. Rather, this step is being taken to improve the availability of smaller denomination notes, making it easier for people to make daily transactions.
When will the new system for smaller notes be implemented
The government has clarified that by September 30, 2025, approximately 75% of ATMs will have at least one slot for ₹100 or ₹200 notes. Subsequently, by March 31, 2026, this system will be implemented in 90% of ATMs. However, the purpose of this entire system is not to ban ₹500 notes, but to make smaller notes more accessible.
The message circulating on social media is fake

Last Sunday, a fake WhatsApp message went viral, claiming that the RBI had ordered banks to stop dispensing ₹500 notes from ATMs. The message also stated that people should spend their 500 rupee notes as they would soon be discontinued.
The RBI and the government have clarified that there have been no changes to the 500 rupee note, nor are there any plans to discontinue it in the future. If there are any major changes in the future, information will be provided only through official sources. Please avoid rumors and trust the truth.
