Bihar Flood: Heavy rains in Nepal have once again caused rivers in Bihar to overflow, creating a flood-like situation in several districts. News of the 200-foot Champaran embankment breaching in Yogapatti, West Champaran, has caused widespread panic. Meanwhile, a ring dam on the Gandak River in Gopalganj has breached, causing widespread panic.

A significant portion of the ring dam near Sheetalpur village in the Baikunthpur block area of Gopalganj district unexpectedly gave way. The powerful waters of the Gandak River rushed swiftly into residential zones and low-lying areas, creating a serious flood risk for more than a dozen communities.

Flood waters inundated these villages

Following the ring dam failure, water quickly spread into numerous villages, including Sheetalpur, Faizullahpur, Khomharipur, Salempur, Narwar, Bahrampur, Gambhari (partial), Baikunthpur, Chiutaha, and Banaura (partial).

Residents sought refuge on elevated embankments

The rapid water surge triggered widespread alarm in the affected regions. People have relocated to higher elevations and primary embankments, bringing along their animals, vital paperwork, and grain supplies. Several main roads experienced traffic disruptions due to flooding.

Intense water pressure complicates restoration efforts

Upon learning of the situation, personnel from the regional administration and Water Resources Department arrived immediately. Repair operations for the ring dam and erosion prevention are in progress, though the intense water current significantly hampers these efforts. NDRF and SDRF personnel have been stationed in the impacted areas to assist in rescuing those stranded.

Community members report that water levels continue climbing, submerging hundreds of acres of farmland and endangering crops. The regional administration has urged residents to stay calm and relocate to safer, elevated locations.

Champaran embankment breached by 200 feet in Yogapatti, Bettiah.

In another development, the Champaran embankment connecting Golaghat village to Bhawanipur in Yogapatti block of West Champaran has ruptured across roughly 200 feet. This breach endangers approximately half a dozen surrounding villages. The swift water movement has alarmed local residents. The initial breach measured 80 feet.

Public anger against the administration

Local villagers allege that despite the breach, officials from the Water Resources Department failed to arrive on time, leading to public resentment towards the administration. Villagers are demanding the government and administration repair the breached embankment as soon as possible to stem the impact of the rising waters and protect the surrounding villages.

Meanwhile, after receiving information about the breach in the embankment, Yogapatti Block Development Officer Vikram Singh and Bettiah SDM Vikas Kumar arrived at the scene late at night to assess the situation. The officials inspected the situation and the affected areas. The administration’s biggest challenge is to quickly repair the breached embankment and control the flow of water, preventing further flooding in the surrounding villages.
