Ayushman Bharat Card: The central government’s Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) is a significant support for underprivileged families in the nation. This initiative provides eligible families with free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh annually. To take advantage of this scheme, it’s essential to verify your eligibility before submitting an application.

When and why was this scheme introduced?

This comprehensive health initiative was launched in 2018, aiming to shield economically disadvantaged and low-income families from exorbitant medical expenses. The scheme offers cashless treatment up to Rs 5 lakh at numerous government and select private hospitals nationwide.

Who stands to gain?

Eligibility for the Ayushman card is primarily based on the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 data and ration card details. Different criteria apply for rural and urban settings:

Rural areas: Individuals residing in kutcha houses, landless laborers, daily wage workers, and extremely impoverished families qualify. Urban areas: This category includes garbage collectors, street vendors, rickshaw pullers, tailors, and other low-income earners. A significant advantage for seniors: The government has broadened the scope of this initiative. Now, all senior citizens aged 70 and above can benefit from this scheme, irrespective of their family income. Exception: Families with a member in government employment, paying taxes, or owning a car or tractor are not eligible for this program.

Key advantages of the scheme:

Free Insurance of Rs 5 Lakh: Health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh for the entire family each year. Cashless treatment: You won’t need to spend any money out of pocket when admitted to the hospital. Chronic diseases are also covered: Treatment for all chronic and serious illnesses is free from the first day of enrollment in the scheme. Additional costs covered: This includes expenses for pre-hospitalization tests and post-discharge medications.

How to check your eligibility and create a card?

To check your eligibility, you can visit the official beneficiary portal (beneficiary.nha.gov.in) or download the ‘Ayushman App’ on your mobile phone. Enter your mobile number and login via OTP. Then, search for your name using your state, district, and Aadhaar number or ration card number.
