Toll Tax: If you regularly drive on national highways and are weighed down by costly toll fees, there is great relief in store. From July 2, 2025, the government has decided to cut toll fees by 50% for highways with infrastructures such as bridges, tunnels, or flyovers. This has been done under a new regulation from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to light the pockets of travellers.
Why Was Toll So Expensive Until Now
In the past, if a section of a highway had bridges, flyovers, or tunnels, toll was computed on ten times the length of the structure. As it requires a lot of money to construct such buildings, the rates were high, straightaway impacting what passengers were paying. Currently, this formula for computing has been altered, and you will see a considerable relief in your travel expense.
What Does the New Rule Say
As per the new government regulation, toll will be computed in two ways. The first is ten times the length of the structures on that highway section. and the second is five times the overall highway section’s length. Whatever amount is less will now be taken into account for toll computation.

For instance, if a highway stretch is 40 kilometres long, and the entire stretch. is constructed as a tunnel or bridge, the previous. formula would have found 10 × 40 = 400 kilometres. But with the new approach, it will be found as 5 × 40 = 200 kilometres, as 200 is less than 400. This implies that commuters will now pay only half the previous toll money, saving money in the process.
Where Will This Rule Be Applicable
If you believe this rule will be applicable to all highways, that is incorrect. It will only be applicable to highways. on which over 50% of the length consists of structures like bridges, tunnels, or elevated flyovers. Roads without such high structures will still carry the same toll as earlier, with no adjustment in the formula.
Travel to Get Cheaper and Simpler
This decision by the government is going to save the public travelling on highways directly. Not only will the cost of travelling come down, but the toll system will become more equitable and comprehensible now. This can increase trade and reduce the cost of highway travel for the common man.
