Tata Motors is about to take a major and historic step to revolutionize the Indian automobile sector. Shailesh Chandra, MD and CEO of the company’s Passenger Vehicle Business, has confirmed that Tata Motors is all set to launch its first Tata Flex-Fuel Vehicle by late 2026 or early 2027. These state-of-the-art vehicles will be able to run smoothly on any blend, from E20 to E100 (100% pure ethanol).
This new initiative, being implemented in alignment with the Indian government’s ethanol blending policy, will not only reduce the costly import of crude oil but will also prove to be a game-changer in increasing the income of our country’s farmers and making the environment pollution-free.
What is Flex-Fuel Technology?

Flex-Fuel Technology (FFVs) is a unique technology that allows a vehicle’s engine to operate seamlessly on blends of petrol and ethanol in varying proportions. Tata Motors’ upcoming model will be completely environmentally friendly, delivering equal performance on both regular petrol and 100% pure ethanol (E100).
Since ethanol is slightly corrosive, Tata has engineered the engine’s fuel system, injectors, and fuel sensors from special and highly robust materials. These smart sensors automatically detect the amount of ethanol in the fuel tank and adjust engine timing and fuel delivery accordingly, preventing any damage to the vehicle.
Tata’s First Flex-Fuel Car
According to insider information from the auto industry and several media reports, the country’s most popular micro SUV, the Tata Punch, could become Tata’s first flex-fuel vehicle, creating a stir in the market. It’s worth noting that Tata Motors showcased a prototype model of the “Tata Punch Flex-Fuel” at the India Mobility Expo 2025.
The model showcased at the expo used a powerful 1.2-liter petrol engine, specifically tuned to support high ethanol blending. Given the Tata Punch’s unparalleled popularity and its impressive resale value, choosing it as India’s first mainstream flex-fuel car is considered a masterstroke and a wise decision by the company.
Benefits of Flex-Fuel Cars

This visionary initiative by Tata Motors stands to benefit the country on two fronts. When vehicles run solely on E100 ethanol, toxic fumes and carbon emissions will be reduced to almost zero, helping to clean the air in our cities.
On the economic front, India currently imports approximately 90 percent of its crude oil needs from abroad, significantly draining the country’s coffers. Ethanol is primarily produced from sugarcane juice, corn, and agricultural residues. In such a scenario, producing fuel domestically will not only reduce dependence on oil imports but also provide our farmers with a higher price for their crops, giving a new boost to the rural economy.
Challenges
While Tata Motors is technologically ready to begin production, there are some initial challenges along the way. Ensuring adequate availability of ethanol in every corner of the country and establishing dedicated fuel dispensing infrastructure at petrol pumps is a significant task. Furthermore, the manufacturing cost of this specialized engine may be slightly higher initially.
However, the central government is actively formulating policies to address these shortcomings. Seeing Tata Motors’ strong start, other companies like Mahindra and Maruti will also join the race. In the future, Tata may incorporate its unique flex-fuel technology into its other best-selling models, such as the Nexon, Tiago, and Altroz.
