Maruti Sales: Maruti Suzuki remains at the top as India’s largest car manufacturer after it sold 1,67,993 cars in June 2025. Nevertheless, its sales fell by 6% from last year, indicating how rapidly individuals are switching to more expensive, larger cars.

Domestic Sales See a Sharp Fall

In India, Maruti has sold 1,30,151 units in June 2025, compared to 1,48,195 vehicles in the previous year. Passenger vehicle sales dipped by 13% to 1,18,906 units. Entry and mass segment hatchbacks such as Alto, S-Presso, Swift, Baleno, and WagonR witnessed their numbers crash 18% to 60,591 units, compared to 73,444 in June 2024.

SUV Segment Also Struggles

Sales of Maruti’s SUVs such as Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara, and Jimny declined to 47,947 units, from 52,373 a year ago. The Eeco van managed to sell 9,340 units, while the Ciaz sedan grew slightly to 1,028 units, up from 572 last year.

Maruti Hits Record Export Numbers

Even as domestic sales dropped, Maruti Suzuki achieved its highest-ever exports in June 2025. Export numbers jumped 22% to 37,842 units from 31,033 last year. The company seems to be shifting focus toward overseas markets to balance the weaker demand in India. Maruti’s supplies to other brands also went up slightly to 8,812 units.

Why Are People Rejecting Small Cars?

Maruti Suzuki’s senior executive officer Rahul Bharti explained that the main reason behind falling sales of passenger vehicles is the steep drop in demand for small, affordable cars. Earlier, passenger vehicle growth used to be about 1.5 times the country’s GDP growth, but that pattern has changed. Even though India’s GDP is growing by 6.5%, car sales are almost flat. The reason is that the entry-level segment no longer takes part in this growth.

Price Increase Troubles Low-Price Cars

Rahul Bharti mentioned that low prices have become a major issue. Prices of low-priced cars have increased by more than 70% since 2019 due to tighter rules and more stringent safety regulations. This has driven the market for low-price cars down by almost 70%, with many Maruti cars remaining unsold in dealerships.
