Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is on a mission to strengthen its foothold in Japan. With models like the Dolphin, Seal, Yuan Plus (Atto 3), and Sealion 7 already in the market, the company has now entered the micro-EV segment. Kei cars account for 38% of the market in Japan, presenting a significant growth opportunity for BYD. With this in mind, BYD showcased its first Kei car, the Racco, at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. With its compact size, luxurious interior, and strong electric range, this car is set to be a practical and affordable option for Japanese customers.
BYD Racco Kei Car: Design and Size
The Racco’s design reflects the true Kei car character. Its boxy profile, flat body panels, and compact dimensions make it perfect for urban driving. The car is approximately 3.4 meters in length, approximately 1.48 meters in width, and less than 2 meters in height. Following this size allows Kei Car to receive tax and insurance benefits, making it affordable.
The car features a short bonnet with a closed grille, round fog lamps, and a nearly 90-degree steep windshield. Triangular side glass, dual A-pillars, a floating roof effect created by blacked-out pillars, rear sliding doors, and sporty alloy wheels give it a modern and practical design. With a length of 3,395 mm, a width of 1,475 mm, and a height of 1,800 mm, its wheelbase is also designed to maximize cabin space.
Interior and Features
The Racco’s cabin is based on a modern and minimalist design. The floating touchscreen and three-spoke steering wheel give its features a premium feel. The controls are simple and easily accessible. The company is likely to offer advanced safety features and smart driving assistance systems, allowing it to meet Japanese safety standards.
Battery Capacity and Range
BYD has not disclosed powertrain details, but the Racco is expected to feature a 20 kWh LFP battery pack. Based on WLTC testing, its estimated range is estimated to be around 180 kilometers. The car may support 100 kW fast charging, allowing for faster battery charging. It will also use heat pump-based air conditioning technology, which improves energy efficiency.
