Despite the additional GST imposed on high-end motorcycles in the Indian market, Harley-Davidson has not increased the price of its most popular motorcycle, the X440. Developed in partnership with Hero, this powerful motorcycle is still available at a starting price of ₹2.40 lakh (ex-showroom). Learn how Harley-Davidson has made the bold decision to bear the burden of the increased tax, and why the X440 remains a standout in its segment.

Why the X440 Price Hasn’t Increased

Recently, the Indian government announced a new framework imposing a 40% GST on motorcycles with engine capacity greater than 350cc, prompting many manufacturers to immediately increase the prices of their motorcycles. Consequently, Harley-Davidson’s decision to keep the price of the X440 stable is surprising.

According to experts, the price of the X440 should have increased by approximately ₹20,000 under the new tax structure. The company has taken the unusual decision to absorb this additional financial burden rather than passing it on to customers. This move by Harley-Davidson is considered a strategic move to maintain customer trust and brand value.

Hero-Harley Partnership

The journey of the Harley-Davidson X440 is a unique result of the strong partnership between Hero and Harley-Davidson. This bike successfully continues this collaboration. The Hero Maverick 440 was also launched on the same platform, but was discontinued due to low sales. As such, the X440 is now the only bike to single-handedly carry forward the Harley-Hero partnership in this segment. The X440 comes in three variants—Denim, Vivid, and S. Their ex-showroom prices range from ₹2.40 lakh to ₹2.80 lakh.

Powerful Engine and Performance

The X440 features an engine that’s ideal for both long-distance travel and high-speed urban driving. The bike is powered by a 440cc, air-oil-cooled engine that produces 26 hp and 38 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 6-speed transmission and slipper clutch, making for smooth riding and easy gear shifting.

Other companies are also keeping prices stable.

Harley-Davidson isn’t the only one that hasn’t increased prices. Some other major players in the market have also taken this commendable decision: Bajaj’s Triumph and KTM brands have also kept prices stable on some of their motorcycles despite the increased GST. This move promotes customer-centric competition in the premium motorcycle segment.
