Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z vs KTM Duke 390 vs TVS Apache RTR 310 : The excitement around the Indian performance bike industry has never been felt more than now, and the never-ending debate among enthusiasts revolves around three bike names: the Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z, KTM Duke 390, and TVS Apache RTR 310. All three bikes are sporty, poweful, and feature-packed, but how do they behave under the blade? We pit them against one another in performance tests to find the truest form of exhilaration among the three.
Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z is the latest entry from Bajaj into the 400cc segment. The NS400Z is powered by a 373cc liquid-cooled power plant that pushes around 40 PS of max power and 35 Nm of max torque; the bike gives a hefty mid-range hit with linear power delivery. The gearbox is slick, and the bike is stable at high speeds due to its perimeter frame. The open roads ask for cruising above 120 km/h; handling is nice and predictable around the corners, providing many smiles.

The KTM Duke 390 has become a performance bike legend in India. The new version seems to be clad in more aggro and powered by a 399cc liquid-cooled engine, good for 46 PS and 39 Nm. Among the three, it is fast from the get-go with sharp acceleration and cat-like handling. It is light and quick to respond to the rider’s wish for speed and precision but stiff suspension may throw a tantrum on bad roads; shining palm-best on smooth tarmac and switchback ascents toward the sun.

TVS Apache RTR 310 is the most versatile of all. By giving out 35.6 PS and 28.7 Nm from its 312cc liquid-cooled engine, it might seem least powerful on paper; however, these figures are compensated for by a superb riding experience along with technology. There are different riding modes, adjustable suspension, and a comfortable riding posture, making it good both for city riding and weekend rides on the highway. Smooth power delivery also eases the rider into its use without compromising sporty performance.

The fastest 0-100 km/h run was had by the Duke 390 in our performance test, with the NS400Z trailing closely behind, while the RTR 310 was a little slower but very comfortable for long rides. Pure power and adrenaline can’t be conquered by anyone, least of all in favor of the KTM; the NS400Z holds its own well in terms of performance and value; and then there’s the RTR 310 with tech-savvy comfort.
In a nutshell, it all comes down to riding style: the speed demon should get the KTM Duke 390; the budget-conscious powerhouse rider will opt for the NS400Z; and comfort with a sportier character will suit those in favor of the RTR 310.
