New Vehicle Puja – In Sanatan Dharma, it is believed that whenever a person starts something new, they should begin it with a puja. Whether it is buying a new car, bike or even a bicycle, performing a small ritual is considered auspicious. The idea behind this tradition is simple—invoking divine blessings for safety, prosperity and protection from obstacles.

When a new vehicle is brought home, most families especially worship Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. This ritual is performed to ensure that the car remains safe from accidents and that its owner’s journeys are smooth and blessed.

What Items Are Needed for the Puja?

To perform the puja of a newly purchased vehicle, a few simple items are required. These include a flower garland, sweets, Ganga water, a coconut, camphor, kumkum and rice grains (akshat). Before starting the ritual, sprinkle the area around the vehicle with Ganga water, then draw a swastika on the car for good fortune.

How to Perform the Ritual Step by Step?

Once the swastika is drawn, the puja begins. Light camphor and perform an aarti around the vehicle. After this, apply kumkum and akshat to the car as a mark of blessings. Sprinkle the holy water from the kalash over the vehicle. Place some sweets in the car and offer the flower garland. The sweets should later be given to a cow, which is considered highly auspicious.

Coconut Ritual for Protection

Take a coconut and walk around the vehicle seven times while focusing only on positive thoughts. After completing the rounds, stand in front of the car and break the coconut so that its water spills around the area. This is believed to purify the surroundings and remove negativity. Leave the coconut pieces on the ground, then move the vehicle forward over them to complete the ritual.

Such traditional rituals are not just about faith—they also symbolise gratitude, hope and a positive beginning for all the journeys ahead.
