Griha Pravesh Vastu Tips – Building a new home is a dream for every family, and the moment of stepping into it for the first time is considered one of the most sacred events in life. According to Vastu Shastra, a Griha Pravesh performed on the right muhurat and with proper rituals invites peace, prosperity and long-lasting harmony into the household.
Here are the most critical Griha Pravesh rules to never ignore when entering a newly constructed home.
Perform Griha Pravesh Only After Construction Is Fully Completed
Ancient texts describe an unfinished house as inauspicious. Walls, plaster, flooring, paint, doors, windows — everything must be completed before you move in.
If an early entry becomes unavoidable, only perform the puja and return home the same day. Staying overnight in an incomplete house is considered a Vastu defect and may invite unnecessary challenges.
Decorate the Entrance Door Properly
For an auspicious start, the main entrance must be beautifully decorated before the ceremony. A day before Griha Pravesh, hang mango leaves, fresh flowers, Swastik symbols, “Om,” and “Shubh-Labh” at the doorway.
You may also place banana stems, or Ashoka leaves, on both sides. A red rangoli at the threshold and two lit diyas at the entrance help welcome Goddess Lakshmi into the home.
Rangoli, Coconut, and Kalash Are Must-Haves
On the day of entry, create a large rangoli at the entrance with a Swastik or lotus design in the centre. Wrap two coconuts in red cloth and place them on both sides of the door.
The lady of the house should carry a Kalash filled with water, betel nut, durva, a coin, and a red cloth tied on top. She must enter the home with this Kalash on her head and later place it in the northeast corner.
Always Step Inside With Your Right Foot First
The homeowner and his spouse should enter the home together, with the homeowner placing his right foot inside first. After stepping in, break a coconut and chant “Om Gam Ganapataye Namah” for blessings. Entering with the left foot first is considered inauspicious and may create Vastu imbalances.
Set Up the Home Temple Before Anything Else
The first thing you must do inside the new house is set up the temple in the northeast corner. Place idols of Lakshmi, Ganesha, or your family deity, light a lamp, burn incense and chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” for divine protection and grace.
Boil Milk First in the Kitchen for Prosperity
After the rituals, enter the kitchen and boil milk with a bit of sugar and cardamom. Allow the milk to overflow — this is considered highly auspicious and symbolises abundance.
Offer it first to Lord Ganesha and then distribute it as prasad. This tradition is believed to invite Goddess Annapurna into the home, ensuring that the household is always blessed with food and wealth.
