Aadhaar Card New Update: An Aadhaar card remaining active after a person’s death can pose significant risks. Fraudsters could misuse it for illicit bank transactions or to steal pension funds. To address this, UIDAI has introduced a special facility to safeguard the identity of the deceased. Informing Aadhaar holders via its social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), UIDAI stated, “Every request is processed with the utmost care. Once the request is successfully verified, UIDAI initiates the process to deactivate the deceased person’s Aadhaar.

UIDAI Launches a Special Facility
UIDAI has introduced a “Report Death of a Family Member” service on the MyAadhaar portal. The primary objective of this facility is to prevent the misuse of Aadhaar and curb KYC-related fraud. Family members can now submit an online request to deactivate the Aadhaar card by providing the death certificate.

Why is Deactivating Aadhaar Important?
Aadhaar is directly linked to bank accounts, PAN cards, LPG connections, and pensions. If it is not deactivated after a person’s death, fraudsters could misuse it to claim fraudulent subsidies or withdraw funds without authorisation. Deactivating the Aadhaar card is essential for the financial security of the family.

Understanding UIDAI’s New Online Process
To begin, keep the deceased person’s death certificate ready.
Next, visit the MyAadhaar portal and log in using your Aadhaar number and OTP.
Next, navigate to the ‘Services’ section and click on ‘Report Death of a Family Member’.
Enter the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, name, date of birth, and—most importantly—the death certificate number. You need to verify your identity using biometrics or an OTP and submit the request.
If the Aadhaar data is already linked to the death certificate, the system deactivates it more quickly.
Once you have submitted and verified the request, the entire process will take approximately 90 days to complete.
You can visit the ‘MyAadhaar’ portal and use the option to check the Aadhaar deactivation status.
Alternatively, you can visit a nearby Aadhaar Service Center to enquire about updating the records.
