Senior Citizen Card of India 2026: Eligibility, Benefits and Application Process

The senior citizen card is the government identity card issued by various state governments in India to citizens aged 60 years and above. This card is an important document for senior citizens, which can also be used as an alternative identity card to Aadhaar card in many cases. Through it, senior citizens can avail various government and private benefits.

Senior citizen card holders get special benefits in healthcare, travel and financial sectors. They can get free medical services in government hospitals and many private hospitals also offer treatment at discounted prices.

In addition, travel discounts are provided while booking tickets in state transport companies’ buses and some airlines. Senior citizens get higher interest rates than general customers when opening fixed deposits or recurring deposits in banks or financial institutions. Under the Income Tax Act, senior citizens can get income tax exemption of up to a maximum of Rs 3 lakh per year. This is an additional benefit.

This card also serves as a residence proof and allows participation in various welfare schemes of the central and state governments. Even senior citizens can apply for hearing dates on priority basis in Indian High Courts through this card.

Senior Citizen Card can be applied for both online and offline methods. To apply online, first visit the National Government Services Portal (India.gov.in). Then go to the website of the concerned state and fill the application form for Senior Citizen Card. Provide the required information, upload the required documents and passport size photograph. The process will be completed only after submitting the application by paying the prescribed fee.

To apply offline, you have to go to the ‘Seva Kendra’ or the local Tehsildar’s office in your state. From there, you have to collect the application form, fill it correctly and attach the necessary documents. The application can usually be completed by paying a fee of 10 taka.
