Recently, fraudsters have been targeting SBI customers by sending fake messages with the aim of stealing banking data and money. Government agencies and fact-checking teams have also declared these messages as fake and advised people to be vigilant.

Fake Messages Being Sent to SBI Customers on WhatsApp

Cyber ​​fraudsters are sending messages via WhatsApp and SMS claiming that the YONO app will be blocked if the customer does not update their Aadhaar. The message also includes a link to download an APK file, prompting the user to install it immediately out of fear. This is an old tactic used by cybercriminals to induce fear and urgency, leading users to make mistakes.

Account at Risk After Downloading the APK File

The suspicious APK file is likely a malware app that, once installed on the mobile device, gains access to SMS, OTPs, contacts, and banking data. Afterward, the fraudsters can carry out unauthorized transactions from your account. Experts say that banking apps should always be downloaded only from official app stores.

What SBI and the Government Have Said

Both the government fact-checking agency PIB and SBI have clarified that the bank never asks customers to download APKs via WhatsApp, SMS, or email. Information about any banking service or update is only provided through the official website, branches, or the official app.

Understand the Difference Between Real and Fake Messages

Fake messages often create a sense of urgency and pressure to take immediate action, asking users to download unknown links or files. Genuine banking updates are never provided through third-party links or APKs. If you receive such a message, you should ignore it immediately.

What to Do If You Accidentally Download the File

If someone has accidentally downloaded a suspicious app or suspects that money has been deducted from their account, they should immediately report it to the cyber fraud helpline at 1930. In addition, a complaint can also be filed on the National Cybercrime Portal to minimize the damage.
