Passport Rules: These 5 Rules Have Changed in Passports – If You Don’t Know, You Will Face Problems

The central government has made several changes in the passport rules. The government has recently released an official note about the new changes. What are the changes in the passport rules? Here is everything.

Changes in these rules

This new rule has been brought for passport applicants born on or after October 1, 2023 under the new passport rules. From now on, the birth certificate issued by the competent authority will be considered as the only proof of date of birth for them.

Officials said that the authorities had issued an official note earlier this week to implement the amendments to the Passport Rules of 1980. Officials said that the new rules will come into effect after the amendments are published in the official gazette.

In the last few years, the government has amended several passport rules in India. Here are five key passport rule changes you should know about:

Birth certificate rules

Under the new passport rules issued earlier this week, birth certificates issued by the Register of Births and Deaths, Municipal Corporations or under the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1969 will be accepted as proof of date of birth for persons born on or after October 1, 2023.

Passport rules for those born before October 1, 2023

The new rules are not applicable to persons born before October 1, 2023. These persons can prove their date of birth with their birth certificate, transfer or school leaving or matriculation certificate from a recognised educational institution, date of birth of last school attended, PAN card. Individuals can also submit other documents like driving licence or a xerox of the applicant’s service or employment record as proof here.

Address to be recorded on supporting documents

To protect the privacy of the applicant, the new Indian passport rules do not print their residential address on the last page of the passport. Immigration officers will have to scan a barcode to access your residential data.

New rules on colour coding

The government has also issued new colour-coded passports for different people. Diplomatic passport holders get red passports, government officials get white passports, while others get blue passports under the new passport rules.

No parents’ names

The new passport rules also mandate that your parents’ names will not be printed on the last page of the document. This rule has been brought in to benefit children of single fathers or mothers, even those from divorced families.
