Ration Card Update: A ration card is an important government document that helps people get food grains at subsidised rates and also allows them to avail of several government schemes. It also serves as proof of identity and address. If you want to get a new ration card in Delhi, it is important to understand the eligibility criteria and application process. The good news is that the Delhi government has made most of the services related to ration cards online, making the application process much easier than before.
Recently, the Delhi government took a major decision and increased the income limit for ration cards. The annual income limit for eligibility has now been increased to Rs. 1.20 lakh. Earlier, this limit was Rs. 1 lakh. After this change, more needy families in the capital will be eligible to receive subsidised rations under the public distribution system.

New conditions for ration cardholders
Ration cards in Delhi are issued only to those who meet the conditions set by the government. The applicant must be a permanent or current resident of Delhi. There should not be any other ration card in the name of the family. Also, all family members must have an Aadhaar card. The type of ration card is determined based on the family’s income and social status.
Three types of ration cards are issued
In Delhi, mainly three types of ration cards are issued. The Antyodaya Anna Yojana card is for extremely poor families. The Priority Household card is given to families that fall within the specified income limit. The Non-Priority ration card is for families with relatively higher incomes.
What documents are needed?
Some essential documents are required when applying for a ration card. These include Aadhaar cards of all family members, proof of residence in Delhi, such asan electricity or water bill, a rent agreement, passport-size photographs, mobile number, and bank account details where necessary.
How to apply
If you want to apply online, first visit the Delhi government’s Food and Supply Department website nfs.delhi.gov.in. Go to the Citizens’ Corner section and select the “Apply Online for Food Security” option. Then, enter your mobile number and log in or register using the OTP (One-Time Password). After filling out and submitting the form, you will receive an application number, which you can use to track the status of your application.
Those who are unable to apply online can also apply for a ration card offline. This can be done by visiting the nearest Circle Office or Fair Price Shop.
After the application is submitted, the concerned department verifies the documents. Field verification may also be conducted if necessary. If all the information is found to be correct, the ration card is issued, which can then be downloaded online.
