Money directly in bank accounts instead of food items?

Since the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown, the number of people dependent on the ration system has increased significantly. Many have made new ration cards. All ration cards are linked to Aadhaar. In this situation, a meeting was held on February 28 between the Union Food Secretary and the state food secretaries. In this meeting, the Food Ministry proposed that bank accounts be linked with ration cards. When e-KYC is done while making a new ration card, bank account information will also be taken along with Aadhaar information.

The state government has agreed to this proposal. The Special Secretary of the Food and Supplies Department of West Bengal has written to the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Food and Public Distribution, Ravi Shankar, that bank account information can be obtained from the National Payments Corporation. Therefore, there is no need to directly link the bank account with the ration card. The state and the center usually do not agree on anything. But this time the state has agreed to the center’s proposal. If this proposal is implemented, there is speculation as to whether ration card holders will get money directly in their bank accounts instead of food items.

What will happen to ration dealers?

If the central government sends money directly to bank accounts, the role of ration dealers will become secondary. Then the question arises whether food grains will be provided from ration shops or not. As a result, ration dealers are worried. They do not understand what will happen in the future.
