Railway Trick: Travel in AC Coach With Sleeper Ticket, No Extra Fee Required

Many people who love to travel by train are not aware of the IRCTC auto-upgrade rule. This is a rule under which a person’s sleeper class ticket can be upgraded to a higher class, that too automatically. In fact, due to this rule, sometimes a passenger books a sleeper or third AC ticket but gets a seat in second AC or first AC during the journey. That too at the cost of a sleeper class ticket.

Know about the auto-upgrade feature

Auto-upgrade is a facility where if a person books a confirmed ticket of a lower class and for some reason, if an AC class seat is vacant, then the railways can upgrade that sleeper class seat to AC class without any additional cost. No additional charge is taken from the passengers for this.

When is the auto-upgrade facility available?

You have to choose the auto-upgrade option while booking a ticket from IRCTC. If you don’t do this, this service is not available. But after that, it’s all luck. In fact, many travelers benefit from this.

Which passengers are eligible for auto upgrade?

The passenger must have a confirmed ticket.
While booking the ticket, the ‘Consider for Auto Upgradation’ option must be selected.
The seat in the upper class of the train must also be vacant.
If you uncheck this option while booking the ticket, then you will not get the benefit of auto upgrade.
Which class is auto upgraded to?

Railways usually upgrades tickets one class higher, such as:

  • Sleeper (SL) – Third AC (3AC)
  • Third AC (3AC) – Second AC (2AC)
  • Second AC (2AC) – First AC (1AC)
However, upgrading to First AC is rare. Because its seats are limited.

What changes in case of auto upgrade?

  • The seat/berth category changes.
  • The fare remains the same.
  • Other amenities in the train and coach are better.
  • However, there is no guarantee that the passenger will get the desired coach or seat number.
