Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that next year, traditional toll booths will be replaced across the country with a modern, fully digital toll system. The government aims to make highway travel faster, hassle-free, and smarter, eliminating the need for drivers to stop at toll plazas. This new system will be based on integrated electronic technology that will automatically identify vehicles and process payments.
Toll payments will now be seamless
The government is soon going to implement a multi-lane, free-flow electronic toll collection system across the country. Its most significant feature is that it eliminates the need to stop at any barrier or gate. Vehicles will pass at normal speed, and payments will be automatically deducted. This will reduce travel time and virtually eliminate traffic congestion.

What technologies will be used?
This advanced system will utilize three key technologies. First, the FASTag installed on vehicles will process payments using RFID technology. Second, ANPR cameras will scan the vehicle’s number plate. Third, an AI-based identification system will ensure the validity of the vehicle and owner. Even if a vehicle’s FASTag cannot be scanned, the toll amount will be automatically deducted from the account using ANPR and AI. This entire infrastructure will be operated through NPCI’s Nettc platform, which already underpins FASTag payments.
The new system will be implemented nationwide
The system was initially piloted at ten toll plazas. Results were positive, and the system successfully met all technical standards. Now, the government will gradually implement it nationwide. The aim is to make the highway network across the country smarter and efficient.
