Millions of taxpayers are checking their bank accounts daily, but they haven’t received a refund credit message. If you’re facing the same problem, simply waiting isn’t enough. You need to immediately understand why your ITR refund is stuck. Let us explain the biggest mistakes and technical reasons behind not receiving an ITR refund, and what is the solution.
Refunds Under Scrutiny
Refunds are typically issued within a few weeks of ITR filing and verification. This time, many taxpayers have received their refunds, but those whose refunds haven’t yet arrived may be under scrutiny. CBDT chief Ravi Agarwal recently confirmed that the system has red-flagged cases involving high-value refunds and suspicious claims.

These returns are being thoroughly scrutinized, which is causing delays in the refund process. However, refunds involving small amounts are being issued without delay. Ravi Agarwal has stated that normal refunds will be cleared by December, provided your return is error-free.

5 Major Reasons for Delayed ITR Refunds
In most cases, the reason for non-receipt of refunds is not technical glitches, but rather mistakes made by taxpayers while filing their ITR.
1. Incorrect Bank Details
If you have made a mistake in the account number or IFSC code while filing your ITR, your ITR refund may be pending. This is the most common and major mistake.
2. Name Mismatch
If there is a mismatch between the name on your PAN card and the name on your bank account, the refund may be delayed. The Income Tax Department issues refunds only if the name matches exactly.
3. Bank Account Not Pre-Validated
ITR refunds are only deposited into bank accounts that are fully pre-validated on the Income Tax portal. If your account is not fully validated, your refund may be stuck.
4. PAN/Aadhaar Not Linked
If your PAN card is not linked to your Aadhaar card, the Income Tax Department may withhold your ITR refund. This is a statutory requirement.
5. Incorrect Claim or Computation
If you have made a mistake in calculating your tax or claimed deductions that are not valid, the department may withhold your refund and initiate an investigation.
