Temple Visit Rules – In Sanatan Dharma, regular worship is considered one of the most important spiritual practices. It is believed that those who pray daily or visit a temple with devotion remain protected from life’s obstacles. Some people follow detailed rituals, while others worship simply from the heart. In both cases, the purity of intention matters the most. If the mind is clean, every prayer becomes meaningful.
Vastu Shastra also mentions specific rules related to temple visits—especially what you should and should not do upon returning home. One particular rule is often broken unknowingly: washing hands and feet immediately after reaching home from the temple.
Is It Wrong to Wash Your Hands and Feet After Returning From a Temple?
According to spiritual beliefs, washing your feet before entering the temple is considered auspicious. It brings instant positivity and helps the mind become calm and focused before seeing the deity.
However, washing hands and feet right after returning from the temple is not considered ideal. Scriptures say that when we come back from a temple, the divine energy and positivity we carry should enter our home as well. Washing hands and feet immediately can wash away that energy.
This does not mean you should avoid hygiene altogether—wait a while before cleaning yourself.
Important Vastu Rules to Follow After a Temple Visit
Vastu Shastra highlights a few other points to remember:
Do Not Go Anywhere Else on the Way Back
After visiting a temple, one must return home straight away. Stopping elsewhere is believed to reduce the spiritual effect and positivity received during the darshan.
Stay Calm for a While After Returning
Once you reach home, remain quiet and composed for some time. This helps foster positivity in your surroundings and mind.
Do Not Bring an Empty Pot After Offering Water to Shiva
If you offered water on a Shivling, you should not bring the empty vessel back home. Instead, fill it with a bit of water from the temple and sprinkle it in every corner of your house. This act is believed to remove negativity and purify the home environment.
