Donate lamps for ancestors
Lighting a lamp outside the house on the night of Margashirsha Amavasya, facing south, or at the main entrance of your home, is considered very auspicious. The south direction is regarded as the direction of ancestors. While lighting the lamp, one should meditate on one’s ancestors with folded hands.
A vessel filled with water should be kept
On the night of Margashirsha Amavasya, keep a vessel filled with clean water on the roof or balcony of your house. In the morning, offer this water under a Peepal tree. Doing so removes negative energy from the house.
Recite the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita
On Margashirsha Amavasya, before going to sleep, meditate on your ancestors and recite the seventh chapter of the Gita. Doing so ensures salvation for your ancestors and reduces Pitra Dosh from your horoscope.

The following day of Margashirsha Amavasya, or on the same night, donate warm clothes, blankets, or food. According to belief, donating a blanket reduces the inauspicious effects of Saturn and Rahu. Furthermore, there is never a shortage of food in the house.
Circumambulate the Peepal Tree
On the evening of Margashirsha Amavasya, go to a Peepal tree, offer water, and circumambulate the tree seven times. After circumambulating, one should express one’s wishes. It is believed that all the gods and goddesses reside in the Peepal tree, and doing so will alleviate all troubles.
