Huawei Mate 70 Air Debuts in China: Is It the iPhone Air Killer?

Huawei Mate 70 Air: Huawei has launched its ultra-slim new flagship, the Mate 70 Air, in China, and it’s already creating quite a buzz. This directly competes with the iPhone Air from Apple, and even though it is a bit thicker than that, Huawei seems to have packed more features into this sleek device. From an increased-sized battery to an impressive quad-camera setup, let’s see how the Mate 70 Air stands out in this head-to-head battle.

Huawei Mate 70 Air Processor

Huawei Mate 70 Air comes in two chipset options: the Kirin 9020B chipset on the 12GB RAM model and the Kirin 9020A chipset on the 16GB version. Both chipsets ensure fluid performance for daily use, gaming, and multitasking. Of course, HarmonyOS 5.1 runs the show, with a clean interface and seamless optimization at hand. The iPhone Air, meanwhile, will again use an in-house Apple chip for power, while Huawei’s approach at least affords buyers more configuration flexibility.

Display and Battery

Mate 70 Air flaunts a massive 7-inch OLED display with a 1.5K+ resolution (2760 × 1320 pixels) and a 120Hz refresh rate. The visuals are crisp and fluid, making it perfect for streaming, reading, or gaming. The 18.8:9 aspect ratio offers a wide viewing area, giving it an edge for multimedia lovers. Powering it all is a 6,500mAh battery, much larger than iPhone Air’s battery, supported by 66W wired charging via USB 2.0. This makes it ideal for long hours of use without frequent recharges. Despite such power, the phone remains just 6.6mm thick, which is quite an engineering feat.

Huawei Mate 70 Air Camera

This is where Huawei wants to dominate. At the back, there’s a quad-camera system with a 50MP primary lens boasting a large 1/1.3-inch sensor, an 8MP ultrawide shooter, a 12MP RYYB 3x telephoto shooter, and a unique 1.5MP red maple multispectral sensor for color accuracy. The combined lens enhances details, depth, and shots in low light. At the front, there is a 10.7MP selfie snapper positioned neatly in the centered punch-hole design. As compared to the iPhone Air, which usually focuses on balanced performance, the camera hardware from Huawei seems more ambitious.

Price of Huawei Mate 70 Air

Huawei has launched the Mate 70 Air in a variety of different configurations, providing options for more users to suit varied budgets and storage needs. Prices begin at 4,199 yuan, or around $575 for the 12GB + 256GB model, going up all the way to 5,199 yuan, or about $715 for the variant featuring 16GB + 512GB. It is therefore priced appropriately to go toe-to-toe with iPhone Air, considering it has a larger display with a stronger battery setup.

Conclusion

Huawei Mate 70 Air combines elegance with a strong dose of performance. It’s a bit thicker than the iPhone Air but makes up for it with a bigger battery, a larger screen, and a superior camera setup. This phone feels like a well-rounded upgrade for users who enjoy the flexibility of Android with powerful internals and a premium design. Whether it can beat the iPhone Air in real-world performance remains to be seen, but on paper, Huawei has certainly built something impressive.
