India’s defence personnel are likely to experience a dramatic change with the Agneepath Scheme poised for expansion. Launched in 2022 to transform recruitment in the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the scheme is now likely to increase the duration of service for Agniveers from 4 years to 6 or 8 years. The move is expected to improve efficiency, hold onto experienced staff, and make the scheme more attractive to youth applicants.
Proposed Extension of Tenure
The Agneepath Scheme was conceived to attract youth with dynamism for a short period of service. Defence officials and the Ministry of Defence are now planning to extend the duration of service. The initial lot of Agniveers, whose stint will get over in 2026, has proved that four years perhaps may not be sufficient for technical jobs, particularly in the Navy and the Air Force. Lengthening the tenure to 6 or 8 years would promote greater operational continuity and minimize the necessity for frequent retraining.
Permanent Recruitment and Retention
Today, merely 25 percent of Agniveers are given a permanent position when they finish their first term, while 75 percent leave service. The Ministry is said to be considering raising the percentage of those being retained to keep more skilled professionals on board. Yet, this change needs to find a balance between keeping the scheme cost-effective and making sure that the military still gets to enjoy skilled, well-trained members.
Benefits and Service Package
Under the Agneepath Scheme, Agniveers receive a progressive salary that starts at ₹30,000 per month and increases each year. A part of their pay contributes to a Seva Nidhi Fund, matched by the government. After four years, this fund accumulates to about ₹11.71 lakh, which is given as a lump-sum benefit upon completion of service. If the term of service is lengthened, both financial incentives and post-service benefits are likely to increase proportionally, increasing long-term security for Agniveers.
