New Delhi: Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in many areas of West Bengal, impacting normal life. A landslide in the Mirik area of the ​​Darjeeling district has caused severe damage. 18 people have died, and several others are still reported trapped. The death toll is expected to rise.

In addition, the Dudia Iron Bridge, connecting the district’s towns and tourist destinations of Mirik and Kurseong, has collapsed. Vehicular traffic has been completely halted. Due to the heavy rain, traffic on the Siliguri-Darjeeling State Highway 12 has been halted.

The local administration has initiated relief and rescue operations. The continuous downpour is hampering rescue efforts. The administration has also appealed to people to stay away from hilly areas and rivers.

National Highway Connectivity Disrupted

Due to the heavy rains in several areas of West Bengal, a landslide occurred at Hussain Khola on National Highway 110. The link between Siliguri and Darjeeling was completely severed. Furthermore, large amounts of debris fell and accumulated on the roads at several locations. This has severely disrupted traffic on the national highway. The local administration has arranged for emergency services to be diverted.
