AC Type LPG- Good news for LPG users. Taking an important step towards energy conservation and creating a green kitchen, the Central Government has made it mandatory for gas stoves to have energy efficiency standards similar to those for air conditioners and other electrical appliances. That is, just like star rating (one star to five star) is mandatory for air conditioners (AC), similarly, this star rating has now been made mandatory for LPG gas stoves as well.
The Manohar Lal Khattar-led Union Power Ministry on Tuesday notified new mandatory energy consumption standards for domestic LPG stoves, which will come into effect from January 1, 2026. The order, issued under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, is part of the ongoing efforts to improve domestic energy efficiency. It has been published in the official gazette.
The notification states that all domestic LPG stoves used in India, even if imported, must comply with the thermal efficiency standards defined in Indian Standard (IS) 4246. These orders have been issued in consultation with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and star labelling on stoves has been made mandatory to indicate thermal efficiency.
The new labelling scheme includes star rating from 1 to 5 stars based on the thermal efficiency of the LPG stove. The following standards have been prescribed in the rating chart – 1 star stove efficiency should be ≥68% and <70%; 2 star stove efficiency: ≥70% and <72%; 3 star efficiency: ≥72% and <74%; 4 star efficiency: ≥74% and <76% and 5 star stove efficiency: ≥76%.
How long is the labeling valid?
The notification said that the star rating information will be displayed through an official label on each appliance so that customers can easily compare the energy performance of different stove models. The labelling period will be valid from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028, after which it will be reviewed every two years or earlier, if required.
Under the scheme, it is mandatory for all manufacturers and importers of LPG stoves to register through BEE’s online standards and labelling portal, reports Tribune India. Only stoves that run only on LPG (not any other gas type) and have a valid BIS certification will be eligible for labelling.
