Traffic Rules 2025: Two-wheeler riding without a proper helmet can now cost you dearly. Traffic police in some states have stepped up surveillance, and severe action is being initiated. Excuses are a thing of the past, as wise cameras are now being deployed to spot riders from a distance. Here is all you need to know about the new crackdown.
What is the Rule Now
Under the Motor Vehicle Act, both the rider and the pillion have to wear a helmet. According to Sections 129 and 194D, a fine of up to ₹1000 is charged for riding without a helmet. In a few states, authorities have also begun suspending driving licenses and RCs for habitual offenders.
Why Police Are Getting Strict
As per government figures, head injuries caused most of the fatalities in two-wheeler accidents. More than 70% of the deceased were found without a helmet. In a bid to curb this menace, police have initiated special drive enforcement near schools, colleges, malls, and highways. Awareness drives and surprise inspections have also multiplied in cities.
Avoid Challan with These Precautions
If you don’t want to be fined, remember a few points. Wearing any helmet isn’t good enough. You need to wear an ISI-marked helmet. Even low-quality or local helmets can cause a challan. The pillion rider also needs to wear a helmet, and the straps should be securely fastened. Putting the helmet on your head won’t save you if it is not secured properly.
Challan Now Coming to Your Home
Even if you are not caught on the road, don’t relax. The police have now started using CCTV and intelligent cameras to monitor traffic offenses. If you are caught without a helmet, your e-challan is issued remotely and received directly at your doorstep. You can see your challan status by logging on to echallan.parivahan.gov.in.
It’s About Safety, Not Just Fines
More than the challan, your helmet could save your life. Avoiding the fine shouldn’t be your only goal — protecting your life should be. You might escape the eyes of the police, but you can’t escape the risk of an accident. So always wear a helmet before riding.
