8th Pay Commission: The Eighth Pay Commission, established for the benefit of central government employees, is actively working to present its suggestions to the government within the set timeframe. To facilitate this, the Commission has two significant meetings planned for October.
It is anticipated that following these meetings, the Commission will initiate the process of drafting its report. Prior to this, central employees have begun estimating their salaries under the Eighth Pay Commission based on their preferences. It is crucial to consider that the fitment factor will have the most significant impact on these calculations.
The fitment factor is mainly utilized to establish the new basic salary, with additional allowances like dearness allowance (DA), house rent allowance (HRA), and transport allowance computed separately. It’s important to mention that a fitment factor of 2.57 was utilized in the previous 7th Pay Commission. However, let’s analyze the expected salary increase for employees at Level 8, with a current basic salary of Rs 47,600.
Current Basic Salary of Level 8 Employee
For instance, if a Level 8 employee currently earns Rs 47,600 as basic salary, their gross monthly salary would be around Rs 90,440. By applying Fitment Formula 2, the basic salary would rise above Rs 95,000. This new basic salary would result in a gross salary exceeding Rs 1 lakh for a central government employee at this level. As the fitment formula rises, so does the salary of central government employees.
Key Points Regarding Gross Salary
The Commission establishes a new basic salary for an employee based on a specific fitment factor. The total gross salary is determined by adding relevant allowances such as HRA, transport allowance, and others to this revised basic salary. Consequently, a substantial increase in basic pay and a proportional rise in take-home pay are distinct matters. The actual fitment factor, new pay structure, and allowances will only become apparent once the final recommendations of the Eighth Pay Commission are published and endorsed by the government.
The Eighth Pay Commission is set to convene in Bengaluru on October 7-8 and in Mumbai on October 22-23, 2026. Previous consultations with employees and stakeholders have also been conducted in Chandigarh, Chennai, Puducherry, and Jaipur. Discussions in these meetings have revolved around salary adjustments and fitment factors, among other significant employee-related topics.
