8th Pay Commission: Good news for central government employees. It has been nearly eight months since the formation of the Eighth Pay Commission, leaving the commission with 10 months to present its recommendations. The primary focus is on proposing adjustments to the salaries, pensions, and allowances of central government staff, benefiting around 5.5 million employees and 6.9 million pensioners. There is a possibility of the government announcing an increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) in September of the current year.
Good News Will Come in September?
The Dearness Allowance has risen to 60 percent following a 2 percent increase announced by the central government in January. The President of the All India NPS Employees Federation, Manjeet Singh Patel, mentioned that typically, DA announcements are made in September, although occasionally they have been delayed until October.

The delay in announcing DA is attributed to the need for thorough evaluation based on two to three months of data. The calculation of DA for central government employees relies on the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) data. The latest AICPI-IW for April 2026 rose by 0.8 points to 149.9, influencing the DA rate for July 2026, which will be determined by the May and June AICPI-IW figures.
Big Update on 8th Pay Commission
Employee unions and associations have already submitted their proposals to the 8th Pay Commission by the June 15, 2026 deadline, outlining revisions in salaries, pensions, and retirement benefits. Among the demands made, a higher fitment factor and a substantial increase in the minimum basic pay stand out prominently.

Having concluded the consultation phase with employees post the June 15th deadline for memorandum submission, the Pay Commission is now in the process of carefully reviewing the suggestions provided by employees, pensioners, judicial officers, and other stakeholders. Furthermore, the commission has commenced visits to states and union territories to gather additional feedback from employees, with some visits to states already completed.
