The future of India’s ODI captain Rohit Sharma is uncertain. He has retired from T20 International and Test cricket. He now wants to play only ODI cricket, but the team management and young players are making it difficult for him. His childhood coach Dinesh Lad has said that Rohit Sharma has only one goal now — to win the ODI World Cup. After that, he will also retire from ODI cricket. Rohit left T20 cricket after the T20 World Cup and Test cricket before the England tour.
Rohit’s Goal: Win the 2027 ODI World Cup
Dinesh Lad, childhood coach of captain Rohit Sharma, who has won two ICC trophies for India, said in Gaurav Mangalani’s podcast, “When Rohit retired from T20Is, he did not retire from Tests and ODIs because he still wanted to win the WTC and ODI World Cup, which we lost in 2023. But we could not reach the 2025 WTC final, so he left Tests also. Now, his only goal is to play ODIs and win the 2027 World Cup. After that, he will retire.”
No Cricket Till Australia Tour
Rohit Sharma, also called Hitman, will not play professional cricket for now. He and Virat Kohli will play directly in the ODI series in Australia in October, as the ODI and T20 series in Bangladesh in August is canceled. This means both will take time to return to international cricket. Rohit and Kohli last played in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where India beat New Zealand in the final to win their second ICC title in a row.
